This portrait by Ruan Zude depicts his great-granduncle, Yizhai, at the age of eighty-five. Executed in ink and colour on silk, the work adheres to the conventions of traditional Chinese ancestor portraiture. The subject is shown in a formal, frontal pose, seated upon a chair draped with a patterned textile. His expression is one of calm composure, with the fine lines of his face and sparse beard rendered through precise, delicate brushwork.
The figure wears a bright blue robe, which provides a striking contrast against the muted, earthy tones of the background. The garment features subtle, repeating patterns that suggest the texture of silk damask. The composition is balanced and symmetrical, reflecting the social and ritual functions of such portraits within the family context.
