A detailed sixteenth-century engraving by Abraham de Bruyn, depicting Albrecht Friedrich, Margrave of Brandenburg, in formal court attire.
This engraving by Abraham de Bruyn depicts Albrecht Friedrich, Margrave of Brandenburg, a figure of significant political standing in the late sixteenth century. De Bruyn, a prolific printmaker based in Antwerp, utilised the precision of the burin to capture the textures of the subject's attire, from the stiff ruff collar to the heavy, layered chains of office. The composition follows the conventions of aristocratic portraiture of the period, placing the sitter in a formal, half-length pose against a backdrop that includes a draped curtain and his heraldic coat of arms.
The subject is rendered with a focus on linear clarity. The artist employs cross-hatching to define the contours of the face and the folds of the cloak, creating a sense of volume within the two-dimensional medium. A plumed hat rests on a table to the left, serving as a secondary attribute of his status. Below the figure, an inscription in German provides his titles, confirming his role as Margrave of Brandenburg and Duke of Prussia. This work is typical of the period's interest in documenting the nobility through mass-produced prints, which allowed for the dissemination of royal and aristocratic likenesses across Europe.
Abraham de Bruyn was known for his technical skill in engraving, often producing series of costume studies and portraits that circulated widely among collectors and scholars. This print reflects the aesthetic values of the Northern Renaissance, where attention to detail and the accurate representation of material surfaces were prioritised. The print remains a clear example of the portrait engraving tradition, offering a glimpse into the visual culture of the sixteenth-century court. It is a document of both the sitter's identity and the technical capabilities of the Antwerp print workshops during this era.
