A 1572 engraving by Abraham de Bruyn depicting Anna of Cleves, showcasing the precise line work and formal portraiture style of the Northern Renaissance.
This engraving by Abraham de Bruyn, dated 1572, depicts Anna of Cleves in a formal, courtly manner. De Bruyn, a Flemish engraver and publisher active in Antwerp and Cologne, was known for his precise documentation of costume and social hierarchy through the medium of print. The work captures the subject in a three-quarter view, positioned behind a table, which provides a sense of physical presence and stability to the composition.
The subject wears a structured bodice with a lattice pattern, characteristic of the fashion prevalent in the mid-sixteenth century. Her sleeves are puffed and detailed, demonstrating the engraver's ability to render different textures through varied line weights and cross-hatching. A ruff encircles her neck, framing the face, while her head is adorned with a close-fitting cap. To the upper left, a coat of arms is displayed, signifying her noble lineage and status. The background features a draped curtain, a common device in portraiture of the period to suggest an interior setting.
Below the figure, an inscription in German identifies her as the daughter of Wilhelm, Duke of Jülich-Cleves-Berg. The text, rendered in a formal script, integrates the print into the tradition of commemorative portraiture. De Bruyn uses a controlled, systematic approach to shading, which defines the volume of the figure against the flatter background elements. The engraving reflects the technical rigour of the period, where the artist balanced the need for accurate likeness with the decorative requirements of heraldry and costume display. This print offers a clear view of the aesthetic priorities of the era, focusing on the material culture of the nobility through a disciplined graphic technique.
