A 1630 portrait by Bartholomeus Sarburgh depicting Belia Claesdr, capturing the sober attire and formal realism of the Dutch Golden Age.
This portrait by Bartholomeus Sarburgh depicts Belia Claesdr in 1630. The subject is shown at the age of sixty-three, a detail confirmed by the inscription in the upper left corner. Sarburgh, a painter active in the Dutch Golden Age, captures the sitter with a focus on realism and the social markers of the period.
Belia Claesdr is dressed in the sober, dark attire characteristic of the Dutch burgher class during the seventeenth century. She wears a large, pleated ruff, which frames her face and signifies her status. Her head is covered by a white cap, and she holds a small book in her hand, suggesting a life of piety or intellectual engagement. The artist employs a muted colour palette, dominated by browns, blacks, and the stark white of the ruff and cuffs. This contrast directs the viewer's attention to the sitter's face, where Sarburgh renders the textures of aged skin with precision.
The composition is formal and restrained. The background is a simple, dark tone, which prevents distraction from the subject. The inclusion of a coat of arms in the upper left corner provides further identification of the sitter's lineage. This work is typical of the portraiture produced for the Dutch middle class, where the objective was to record the appearance and social standing of the individual with clarity. The painting remains a clear example of the technical skill found in regional Dutch portraiture of the 1630s, prioritising accurate observation over idealisation.
