A formal 1819 portrait engraving of Charles Joseph Mathieu Lambrechts by the French artist Ambroise Tardieu.
This engraving by Ambroise Tardieu depicts Charles Joseph Mathieu Lambrechts, a French politician and jurist who served as a deputy for the Bas-Rhin department. Produced in 1819, the work reflects the formal portraiture conventions of the early nineteenth century. Tardieu utilises precise line work and stippling techniques to model the subject's features, creating a sense of volume within the oval frame. The composition is restrained, focusing entirely on the sitter's bust, which is rendered with attention to the texture of his period attire, including the high collar and the small decoration pinned to his coat.
Ambroise Tardieu was a member of a prominent family of cartographers and engravers. His technical proficiency is evident in the clarity of the facial features and the subtle shading that defines the contours of the face. The portrait is accompanied by a formal inscription identifying the subject and his political role, a common practice for prints intended for public circulation or inclusion in biographical collections of the era. The clean, white margins and the deliberate placement of the text beneath the oval vignette demonstrate the orderly aesthetic typical of French printmaking during the Bourbon Restoration.
This print offers a clear view into the visual culture of the post-Napoleonic period, where the dissemination of portraits of public figures was a standard method of political communication. The work remains a fine example of the engraver's craft, prioritising accuracy and clarity over decorative flourish. It provides a direct, unadorned record of a figure active in the legislative chambers of the time, captured through the disciplined medium of copperplate engraving.
