A formal portrait of Dutch statesman Cornelis de Witt by Jan de Baen, featuring naval motifs and period attire from the Dutch Golden Age.
Jan de Baen, a prominent portraitist of the Dutch Golden Age, captures Cornelis de Witt in this formal composition. De Witt, a significant political figure and brother to the Grand Pensionary Johan de Witt, is depicted with the trappings of his naval authority. He holds a baton of command, a common attribute in seventeenth-century military portraiture, signifying his role as a deputy for the States of Holland at sea.
The subject wears an elaborate outfit featuring metallic embroidery and a lace collar, reflecting the status of the Dutch elite during this period. Behind him, a heavy red curtain provides a theatrical backdrop, while the right side of the canvas opens to a maritime scene. This inclusion of a naval engagement or fleet serves to contextualise his responsibilities during the Anglo-Dutch Wars. The lighting is dramatic, typical of the period, with a focus on the subject's face and the reflective surfaces of his attire.
De Baen was known for his ability to render textures, from the soft lace to the stiff, metallic threads of the sash. The composition follows the conventions of aristocratic portraiture, placing the subject in a three-quarter view that balances authority with a sense of individual presence. This work provides a window into the political climate of the Dutch Republic, where military and civil leadership were often intertwined. The painting remains a primary visual record of the De Witt family, who occupied a central position in the governance of the Netherlands before the political upheavals of 1672.
