A sixteenth-century engraving by Dominicus Lampsonius depicting the painter Joachim Patinier, featuring fine line work and Latin inscriptions.
This engraving depicts the painter Joachim Patinier, a figure associated with the early development of the genre in the Low Countries. The work is part of the series 'Pictorum aliquot celebrium Germaniae inferioris effigies', published by Dominicus Lampsonius in 1572. This collection of portraits served to document the lives and appearances of notable artists from the region, providing a visual record for contemporaries and future generations.
The portrait shows Patinier in a three-quarter view, wearing a doublet with a ruff collar. The engraving technique employs fine, parallel lines to model the form of the face and the texture of the clothing. The shading is precise, creating a sense of volume within the restricted space of the rectangular frame. The inclusion of Latin text below the portrait identifies the subject and provides a poetic tribute, a common practice in sixteenth-century print culture to elevate the status of the artist.
Lampsonius, who was himself a painter, humanist, and poet, used these prints to bridge the gap between visual art and literary scholarship. The composition is restrained, focusing entirely on the character of the sitter. The background is simple, ensuring that the viewer's attention remains on the facial features and the expression of the subject. This print is a clear example of the technical skill involved in sixteenth-century Flemish engraving, where the artist had to translate the nuances of a painted portrait into the linear language of the copper plate. The work remains a valuable historical document for those interested in the history of Northern European art and the professional identity of painters during the Renaissance period.
