A seventeenth-century Dutch engraving by Cornelis Koning, depicting the poet and theologian Dirck Rafaelsz. Camphuysen within an oval frame.
This engraving by Cornelis Koning depicts the Dutch poet and theologian Dirck Rafaelsz. Camphuysen. Created in 1627, the work adheres to the conventions of seventeenth-century portraiture, presenting the subject within an oval frame. The composition is formal, focusing on the sitter's upper torso and head, which are rendered with precise, controlled lines characteristic of the period's printmaking techniques.
Camphuysen is shown wearing a ruff, a common element of dress for the Dutch intellectual class during this era. His expression is direct, engaging the viewer with a steady gaze. The artist employs cross-hatching to create depth and shadow, particularly within the folds of the clothing and the contours of the face. The surrounding oval border contains biographical text, a common feature in commemorative prints of the time, providing details about the subject's birth in Gorinchem and his death in Dokkum.
Below the portrait, a four-line verse in Dutch serves to honour the subject, praising his literary contributions and his character. The typography and the integration of text with the visual image reflect the function of such prints as both personal mementos and public tributes. As a piece of Dutch Golden Age graphic art, this work provides insight into the visual culture surrounding figures of religious and literary importance in the Netherlands. The technical execution demonstrates the skill required to balance portraiture with the inclusion of extensive calligraphic elements, resulting in a balanced and informative composition.
