A 1783 silhouette portrait by Dutch artist Jan Brandes, depicting a Bugis individual in profile with precise, minimalist linework.
This silhouette portrait by Jan Brandes, dated 1783, captures a profile view of a Bugis individual. Brandes, a Dutch clergyman and amateur artist, produced a vast collection of drawings during his time in the Dutch East Indies. His work often documents the people, flora, and fauna he encountered, providing a personal record of colonial life in the late eighteenth century. The portrait is executed in a stark, monochromatic style characteristic of the silhouette tradition. The subject is rendered in a solid black fill, which emphasises the outline of the facial features, including the nose, chin, and hairline. A few delicate strokes at the back of the head suggest the texture of hair, providing a subtle contrast to the otherwise flat, opaque form. The paper shows signs of age, with visible discolouration and minor staining, which adds to the historical character of the piece. Brandes often included handwritten annotations on his works, and this piece is no exception. The inscription at the bottom right provides specific details about the subject and the date of creation. Such documentation is common in his sketchbooks, which now reside in the Rijksmuseum collection. This print offers a clear view of the artist's technique, where the focus remains entirely on the profile silhouette. It is a direct, unadorned representation that reflects the observational practices of the period. The work is a study in minimalism, relying on the precision of the outline to convey the likeness of the sitter. By stripping away colour and depth, Brandes creates a graphic image that remains legible and striking centuries later.
