A formal nineteenth-century engraving by Friedrich Wagner, depicting the theologian Ernst Zimmermann in a classic bust-length portrait.
This engraving by Friedrich Wagner depicts the German theologian Ernst Zimmermann. Wagner, a skilled engraver active during the nineteenth century, utilised the precise techniques of the period to capture the likeness of his subject. The portrait is framed within a formal, geometric border, which reflects the aesthetic preferences of the Biedermeier era. The subject is shown in a bust-length format, wearing a high-collared coat and a cravat, typical of the formal attire of the time.
The execution of the print demonstrates the technical rigour required for nineteenth-century portraiture. Wagner employed fine hatching and cross-hatching to create depth and texture, particularly in the rendering of the fabric of the coat and the subtle modelling of the face. Below the portrait, the name 'Zimmermann' is inscribed within an elaborate, calligraphic cartouche, a common feature in commemorative prints of this period. This addition provides a decorative element that balances the sobriety of the portrait itself.
Friedrich Wagner was known for his ability to translate painted portraits into the medium of engraving, allowing for the wider dissemination of images of public figures. This work is a clear example of the professional standards maintained by printmakers who served the academic and religious circles of the time. The composition is balanced and restrained, focusing the viewer's attention on the character of the sitter. The print remains a record of the visual culture of the mid-nineteenth century, documenting both the individual and the stylistic conventions of the engraver's craft.
