An eighteenth-century etching and engraving by Jan Punt, depicting the historical figure Fadrique Álvarez de Toledo in a formal profile portrait.
This print by the Dutch engraver Jan Punt depicts Fadrique Álvarez de Toledo, known as Don Frederik, the son of the Duke of Alba. The work is executed in the style of an eighteenth-century book illustration, featuring a formal oval frame set upon a classical pedestal. The subject is shown in profile, facing left, wearing a period-appropriate cap and a ruff collar. The engraving technique employs precise hatching and cross-hatching to define the contours of the face and the texture of the clothing, creating a clear sense of volume within the two-dimensional space.
The composition is typical of historical portraiture intended for publication, with the sitter's identity and titles inscribed on the pedestal base. The text identifies him as the commander during the sieges of Haarlem and Alkmaar, reflecting the historical context of the Eighty Years' War. Punt, who was active in Amsterdam during the mid-eighteenth century, produced numerous such portraits for historical and biographical volumes. His work is characterised by a disciplined approach to line and a focus on clarity, which was common for printmakers of the period who aimed to provide accurate visual records for scholarly texts.
The print is presented with a clean, academic aesthetic. The background within the oval is subtly shaded to push the figure forward, while the surrounding area is filled with a dense grid pattern. This contrast ensures that the portrait remains the primary focus. The inclusion of page numbers at the top corners confirms its origin as a plate from a larger historical work. This piece offers a glimpse into the methods of eighteenth-century Dutch printmaking, where technical precision was applied to the documentation of historical figures.
