A detailed portrait engraving of the painter Hans von Aachen, captured in the formal style of the seventeenth century.
This engraving by Johann Georg Waldreich depicts the painter Hans van Aken, also known as Johann von Aachen. The subject is presented within a classic oval frame, a common format for seventeenth-century portraiture intended for inclusion in biographical collections or print series. Van Aken is shown in three-quarter profile, wearing a ruff collar and a doublet, which reflects the formal attire of the period.
The technique employed is characteristic of the era, utilising fine, parallel lines to create shading and volume. The cross-hatching around the neck and within the folds of the clothing provides a sense of depth, while the face is rendered with softer, more delicate strokes to capture the texture of the skin and the individual hairs of the moustache and beard. The Latin inscription, 'JOHANNES AB ACH COLONESIS', identifies the subject as Hans von Aachen of Cologne, a painter who achieved success in the courts of Europe, including those in Italy and Prague.
Waldreich focuses on the physical likeness of the artist, conveying a sense of professional dignity. The composition is balanced, with the subject's gaze directed slightly away from the viewer, suggesting a moment of quiet contemplation. The background, composed of horizontal lines, ensures that the figure remains the primary focus. This print offers a clear example of the portrait engraving tradition, where the precision of the burin allowed for the dissemination of an artist's image across borders. It serves as a record of the appearance of a significant figure in the history of Northern European painting, preserved through the medium of printmaking.
