A refined Neoclassical portrait of Jacob Claude Swart reading, accompanied by a commemorative memorial text from 1816.
This portrait depicts Jacob Claude Swart in a moment of quiet contemplation, captured while reading. David Pièrre Giottino Humbert de Superville employs a refined, linear approach, characteristic of the Neoclassical style prevalent in the early nineteenth century. The composition focuses entirely on the subject, stripping away extraneous background details to draw attention to the sitter's posture and the act of reading. The artist uses a delicate, monochromatic line to define the contours of the face, the folds of the clothing, and the pages of the book.
The print is accompanied by a printed memorial text in Dutch, which identifies the subject and provides context regarding his untimely death at the age of twenty-one. This inclusion transforms the work from a simple portrait into a commemorative object. The text, dated 29 March 1816, serves as a formal announcement from his parents, Arend Bernard Swart and Johanna Cornelia Swart, born van den Ende. The combination of the austere, clean-lined portrait and the sombre typography creates a balanced visual experience.
Humbert de Superville was known for his theoretical interests in art, particularly his studies on the expression of human features and the psychological impact of lines. This portrait reflects his interest in clarity and the reduction of form to its essential components. The use of a single-colour ink on a neutral paper ground emphasises the graphic quality of the work, allowing the viewer to appreciate the precision of the draughtsmanship. The portrait remains a clear example of the intersection between personal memorialisation and the formal artistic practices of the period, demonstrating how a simple line drawing can convey both individual character and a sense of solemnity.
