A mezzotint portrait of Jan Six by Wallerant Vaillant, a prominent figure in the Dutch Golden Age. The print showcases the soft tonal gradations achievable through the mezzotint technique.
This is a mezzotint portrait of Jan Six by Wallerant Vaillant. Jan Six (1618-1700) was a prominent figure in the Dutch Golden Age, serving as a mayor of Amsterdam and a patron of the arts. He was also a friend and patron of Rembrandt van Rijn, who painted his portrait. Vaillant, a Dutch Golden Age painter and printmaker, was one of the first artists to use the mezzotint technique, which allowed for the creation of rich tonal gradations. The portrait depicts Six in a three-quarter view, turned slightly to the left. He has long, curly hair and a small moustache. He wears a dark coat with a wide, white collar and a decorative tassel at the chest. The background is dark and undefined, which concentrates attention on Six's face and upper body. The mezzotint technique gives the print a soft, velvety quality, with subtle transitions between light and shadow.
