A detailed seventeenth-century engraving of the Bohemian reformer Jan Hus by Dutch artist Wilhelmus Goeree.
This engraving depicts the Bohemian reformer Jan Hus, a figure central to the pre-Reformation movement. The portrait captures him in a three-quarter view, wearing a wide-brimmed hat and a heavy, layered cloak. His expression is composed, and he holds a book, which serves as a symbol of his theological scholarship and his role as a preacher. The background features a brick wall and an arched opening, providing a sense of architectural structure to the composition.
Wilhelmus Goeree, a Dutch author and engraver, produced this work during the seventeenth century. The technique relies on precise cross-hatching and parallel lines to define the contours of the face, the texture of the fabric, and the shadows within the stone masonry. The print demonstrates the technical skill common to Dutch printmaking of the period, where clarity of form and attention to detail were prioritised. The inscription at the base, 'JOANNES HVT IN MERHERN', identifies the subject, linking him to his origins in Moravia.
This print is an example of historical portraiture intended for educational or commemorative use. It reflects the interest in religious history that persisted in the Netherlands during the seventeenth century. The artist uses light and shadow to create a sense of volume, particularly in the folds of the cloak and the modelling of the subject's features. The composition is balanced, with the figure occupying the majority of the frame, directing the viewer's attention to the face and the book. This piece offers a window into the visual culture of the Dutch Golden Age, where the dissemination of historical and religious imagery was facilitated by the widespread production of engravings.
