A formal group portrait by Raden Saleh, depicting the Van Alphen family in a domestic interior setting, painted in 1840.
This large-scale group portrait by Raden Saleh depicts the family of W.J.S. van Alphen, a prominent colonial administrator in the Dutch East Indies. Painted in 1840, the work captures the domestic sphere of a nineteenth-century European family living in Java. The composition is structured around the matriarch, seated to the left, and her husband, who stands behind her. They are surrounded by their children, who are arranged in a balanced, formal manner across the interior space. A large dog occupies the centre of the foreground, acting as a bridge between the seated figures and the standing children.
Saleh, who spent many years in Europe, demonstrates a command of Western academic painting techniques. The interior is rendered with attention to the textures of the period, from the heavy, patterned wallpaper and the deep orange drapery to the crisp white fabrics of the children's clothing. A small piano and an open doorway leading to a sunlit garden provide depth to the scene, suggesting a comfortable, affluent lifestyle. The lighting is controlled, drawing the eye to the faces of the family members while maintaining a sense of quiet, domestic order. The inclusion of the family pet and the children's toys adds a layer of informality to the otherwise staged arrangement. This painting offers a glimpse into the social hierarchies and cultural exchanges present in the colonial Dutch East Indies during the mid-nineteenth century. Saleh’s ability to integrate his subjects into a cohesive, narrative-driven composition reflects his training in the European tradition of portraiture, while his precise handling of detail maintains a focus on the individual identities of the sitters.
