A formal 18th-century engraving of the French diplomat Nicolas Mesnager, based on a portrait by Hyacinthe Rigaud.
This engraving depicts Nicolas Mesnager, a French diplomat known for his role as a plenipotentiary at the Congress of Utrecht. The portrait follows the conventions of early 18th-century French printmaking, presenting the subject within a formal oval frame set atop a stone-effect plinth. The composition is derived from a painting by Hyacinthe Rigaud, a painter noted for his ability to capture the status and authority of the French aristocracy and political elite.
Mesnager is shown in three-quarter view, wearing a voluminous periwig, which was a standard marker of social standing during the reign of Louis XIV. His attire includes a cravat and a coat adorned with the insignia of the Order of Saint Louis, reflecting his diplomatic rank. The engraver, André-François Le Breton, employs precise cross-hatching and parallel lines to model the form of the face and the texture of the wig. The background within the oval is rendered with a dense, horizontal hatching pattern that creates a sense of depth and focus on the sitter.
The lower portion of the print features a pedestal containing an inscription that identifies the subject, his role at the Congress of Utrecht, and the date of his death in 1714. This inclusion of biographical text is typical of commemorative portrait prints from the period, which functioned as both historical records and objects of collection. The technical execution demonstrates the skill required to translate the painterly qualities of Rigaud's original work into the monochromatic medium of copperplate engraving. The print remains a clear example of the formal portraiture style that defined the visual culture of the late Baroque era in France, capturing the gravity and composure expected of a high-ranking state official.
