A formal portrait engraving of Pierre Séguier by French artist Étienne Desrochers, featuring biographical text and a decorative cartouche.
This engraving by Étienne Desrochers depicts Pierre Séguier, the Chancellor of France, within a formal oval frame. Desrochers, a French engraver active in Paris during the late seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries, produced numerous portrait prints of notable figures, often incorporating elaborate cartouches and descriptive text below the image. The composition follows the conventions of the period, presenting the subject in a dignified, bust-length pose, wearing the attire appropriate to his high office.
The print features a cartouche at the base containing biographical details about Séguier, noting his titles and his death in 1672. Below this, a block of text provides a laudatory verse in French, praising his service to the Crown and his dedication to justice. The use of fine, parallel lines to create shading and texture is characteristic of the engraving techniques employed by Desrochers, who operated a print shop on the rue du Foin in Paris. The background of the oval frame is filled with horizontal hatching, which creates a sense of depth and focus on the subject.
Such portraits were common in the early modern period, serving as a means to disseminate the likenesses of political and intellectual figures to a wider audience. The technical precision of the lines, particularly in the rendering of the subject's facial features and the folds of his clothing, demonstrates the skill required for this medium. This print offers a glimpse into the visual culture of the French Baroque, where portraiture functioned as both a record of historical identity and a display of status. The inclusion of the publisher's address at the bottom of the plate provides specific context regarding the commercial production of prints in Paris during this era.
