A refined 1840 portrait of Theodoor Cornelis Reinier Huydecoper by Dutch artist Nicolaas Johannes Wilhelmus de Roode, executed in watercolour and ink.
This portrait depicts Theodoor Cornelis Reinier Huydecoper, rendered in a delicate wash of monochrome tones. Nicolaas Johannes Wilhelmus de Roode, a Dutch artist active during the mid-nineteenth century, demonstrates a precise approach to facial structure and characterisation in this work. The subject is shown in a three-quarter view, his gaze directed towards the viewer with a calm, composed expression.
The artist employs a subtle application of watercolour to build volume in the face and clothing. The soft, grey-toned background provides a neutral setting that allows the features of the sitter to remain the primary focus. The clothing, typical of the period, includes a high-collared coat and a dark cravat, rendered with careful attention to the folds and texture of the fabric. The signature and date, located in the lower left, confirm the work was completed in 1840.
De Roode was known for his ability to capture the likeness of his subjects with a restrained, academic sensibility. This piece reflects the conventions of portraiture common in the Netherlands during the 1840s, where the focus remained on the individual identity of the sitter rather than elaborate decorative surroundings. The use of ink for the finer details, such as the hair and the eyes, contrasts with the broader, softer washes used for the shadows and the background. This balance creates a sense of depth and realism. The work serves as a record of a specific individual from the Huydecoper family, a name associated with the Dutch regent class. Through this portrait, the artist provides a clear, unadorned representation of his subject, maintaining a focus on the clarity of form and the personality of the sitter.
