A detailed seventeenth-century engraving by Caspar Ensius featuring King James I and Anne of Denmark alongside a genealogical chart.
This engraving by Caspar Ensius depicts King James I of England and his consort, Anne of Denmark, within a formal architectural framework. The composition is divided into two distinct arched niches, with the monarch and queen standing in full regalia. Between them, a central genealogical tree traces their lineage, connecting the royal couple through a series of circular medallions and heraldic shields. This structure serves to legitimise their union and authority through historical descent.
The artist employs precise line work to define the textures of the royal garments, from the stiff ruffs and patterned doublets to the heavy, fur-lined cloaks. The figures are rendered with the characteristic formality of early seventeenth-century portraiture, where posture and costume communicate status rather than psychological interiority. The architectural elements, including the columns and arches, provide a sense of order and stability to the scene.
Below the figures, Latin inscriptions provide biographical details and praise for the royal pair. The inclusion of the genealogical chart is a common feature in political prints of the period, designed to communicate complex dynastic information to a literate audience. The work reflects the political climate of the early Stuart period, where the visual representation of the monarchy was used to solidify the legitimacy of the new dynasty following the death of Elizabeth I. The print is a fine example of the technical skill found in Dutch engraving during this era, where the medium was frequently used for political propaganda and historical documentation. The clarity of the lines and the balanced arrangement of the figures and text demonstrate the methodical approach favoured by printmakers of the time.
