A detailed oil study of a brushtail possum within a eucalyptus tree, painted by the Victorian naturalist Marianne North during her travels.

Marianne North was a prolific Victorian traveller and painter, known for her documentation of global flora and fauna. This work depicts a common brushtail possum, captured within the hollow of a eucalyptus tree. North travelled extensively between 1871 and 1885, producing over 800 paintings that now reside in the Marianne North Gallery at the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew.

Her approach to painting was direct and observational. She utilised oil paints on board, a medium that allowed her to work quickly in varying climates. The composition focuses on the animal, which is rendered with attention to its fur texture and the specific shape of its ears and tail. The surrounding eucalyptus leaves are painted with a muted palette of sage and grey-green, providing a naturalistic context for the subject. North often included local wildlife in her botanical studies, providing a record of the ecological relationships she observed during her expeditions.

Unlike many of her contemporaries who focused on stylised or idealised representations, North prioritised accuracy. Her work serves as a record of species and habitats as they appeared in the late nineteenth century. The brushwork is precise, reflecting her training and her objective to create a scientific archive of the natural world.
