A 1928 Constructivist photomontage by Gustavs Klucis, created to promote the Spartakiada sports event in Moscow.
This work by Gustavs Klucis is a prime example of Soviet Constructivist graphic design. Produced in 1928, the piece promotes the Spartakiada, an international socialist sports event held in Moscow. Klucis, a pioneer of the photomontage technique, combines photographic elements with bold geometric shapes and typography to convey a sense of movement and modern industrial energy.
The composition is divided into distinct zones of colour, using a palette of yellow, black, and blue to organise the visual information. A large-scale figure of a tennis player dominates the foreground, while smaller figures and a schematic representation of a tennis court provide context. The use of diagonal lines and overlapping planes creates a dynamic sense of space, typical of the period's interest in breaking away from traditional, static artistic conventions. The text, integrated directly into the design, serves both as information and as a graphic element that balances the visual weight of the figures.
Klucis utilised these techniques to align art with the social and political goals of the era, focusing on the collective experience of physical culture. The work demonstrates the artist's ability to manipulate scale and perspective, turning a promotional postcard into a sophisticated exercise in visual communication. By layering photographic cut-outs against stark, flat backgrounds, he achieves a sense of depth that feels both constructed and immediate. This piece remains a significant record of the intersection between avant-garde art practices and state-sponsored athletic events in the late 1920s.
