A striking portrait of Isadora Duncan by Charles Demuth, rendered in bold geometric forms and flat planes of colour. This work exemplifies Demuth's Precisionist style and his innovative approach to portraiture.
Charles Demuth's 'Poster Portrait: Duncan' (1928-1929) is part of a series of poster portraits the artist created, depicting friends and fellow artists. These works combine elements of Cubism and American Precisionism, resulting in a unique style that merges portraiture with symbolic representation. Demuth, an American painter, was a key figure in the Precisionist movement, which celebrated industrialisation and modern urban life through clean lines and geometric forms. He also had associations with the Dada movement. This portrait represents the dancer Isadora Duncan. The composition features bold, flat planes of colour, predominantly a salmon pink, with stark black lettering spelling out 'C. Duncan'. A horizontal band of rainbow colours cuts across the centre, adding a layer of visual complexity. Below, a stylised floral motif in black and white provides a decorative counterpoint to the geometric shapes above. The overall effect is a striking, graphic representation that captures the essence of Duncan's persona rather than a literal likeness. The work is currently held in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York.
