A stark, expressive lithograph by Ernst Barlach depicting two gaunt figures, capturing the raw reality of human hardship through simplified, powerful lines.
Ernst Barlach, a central figure in German Expressionism, frequently explored the human condition through stark, simplified forms. This lithograph, titled Poverty, captures two figures standing in a desolate space. The artist employs heavy, charcoal-like lines to define the gaunt anatomy of the subjects, emphasising their physical fragility and emotional weight. The figure on the right is draped in a heavy, shroud-like garment that falls from the head, creating a sense of isolation and sorrow. The figure on the left stands with a slight stoop, their posture suggesting a quiet resignation.
Barlach was known for his ability to strip away unnecessary detail, focusing instead on the essential posture and gesture of his subjects. His work often reflects the social and economic hardships of early twentieth-century Germany. By avoiding decorative elements, he directs the viewer to the raw reality of the figures. The composition is balanced yet unsettling, with the figures occupying a sparse, undefined ground. This print demonstrates his mastery of lithography, where the texture of the drawing medium is preserved through the printing process. The stark contrast between the dark lines and the pale paper surface creates a graphic tension that is characteristic of his broader body of work. Barlach's approach to the human form is sculptural, even in two-dimensional media, as he treats the body as a vessel for psychological experience. This piece remains a direct observation of human suffering, rendered with a sombre, unflinching gaze that avoids sentimentality.
