An illuminated manuscript page from the Très Riches Heures, depicting King David in prayer with decorative Gothic script and marginalia.
This page originates from the Très Riches Heures du Duc de Berry, a manuscript commissioned by Jean, Duke of Berry, and executed by the Limbourg brothers: Herman, Paul, and Jean. The brothers were active in France during the early fifteenth century and are recognised for their contribution to the International Gothic style. Their work demonstrates a shift toward naturalism and a sophisticated handling of light and space within the constraints of the page.
The scene depicts King David in prayer, positioned outside a stone tower. The composition balances the verticality of the architecture with the figure of the king, who is rendered in a pink robe. Above, a divine presence appears in the sky, establishing a narrative connection between the earthly figure and the celestial realm. The surrounding text is written in a formal Gothic script, accompanied by decorative initials and marginal foliage motifs typical of the period.
The use of gold leaf and pigments on vellum provides a luminosity that is characteristic of high-quality medieval illumination. The attention to detail in the stonework of the tower and the naturalistic rendering of the landscape elements reflect the brothers' observational approach to their subjects. This page is an example of the collaborative effort required to produce such a manuscript, where text and image are integrated to create a cohesive devotional object. The precision of the brushwork and the application of colour demonstrate the technical proficiency of the workshop. This print captures the delicate balance of text and image, preserving the aesthetic qualities of the original vellum page for contemporary display.
