A refined ink study of three deer by Ogata Kōrin, mounted upon a delicate hanging-scroll painting of flowering bush clover.
This work presents a unique composition by the Japanese master Ogata Kōrin, a central figure of the Rinpa school. The piece features a preliminary ink sketch of three deer, rendered with fluid, calligraphic lines that capture the animals in motion. This sketch is mounted directly onto a larger hanging-scroll painting that depicts flowering bush clover (hagi). The juxtaposition of the spontaneous, minimalist deer study against the more finished, decorative botanical background creates a dialogue between the artist's initial creative impulse and the final, formal presentation.
Kōrin is celebrated for his ability to balance decorative design with expressive brushwork. In this instance, the deer are depicted with an economy of line that suggests their form without unnecessary detail. The surrounding bush clover, painted in soft washes of ink and subtle colour, provides a seasonal context often associated with autumn in Japanese literature and art. The mounting of the sketch onto the scroll suggests that this was a deliberate aesthetic choice, perhaps intended to preserve a valued study while integrating it into a larger, harmonious composition.
The Rinpa style is known for its use of bold, simplified forms and the application of gold or silver backgrounds, though here the focus remains on the interplay between the ink lines and the paper texture. The work reflects the artist's mastery of brush control, where every stroke serves a purpose in defining the posture and grace of the deer. By combining a preparatory sketch with a finished painting, the scroll offers a rare glimpse into the creative process of an Edo-period artist. It remains a fine example of the aesthetic sensibilities that defined the Rinpa tradition, prioritising elegance, rhythm, and the careful observation of nature.
