A refined woodblock print by Chōbunsai Eishi depicting Prince Genji with three women, showcasing the elegant bijin-ga style of the late Edo period.
This woodblock print by Chōbunsai Eishi depicts a scene inspired by the Tale of Genji, a classic work of Japanese literature. Eishi, a former samurai who transitioned to professional printmaking, is known for his refined approach to the bijin-ga genre, which focuses on images of beautiful women. In this composition, the figures are rendered with elongated proportions and graceful postures, characteristic of the artist's mature style during the late eighteenth century.
The scene features Prince Genji seated among three women, set against a backdrop that suggests an interior space opening onto a garden. The inclusion of a maple tree and stylized clouds provides a sense of seasonal atmosphere. Eishi employs a delicate line quality to define the folds of the kimonos and the facial features of the subjects. The colour palette remains restrained, relying on soft ochres, muted browns, and subtle ink tones to create a balanced visual harmony.
Unlike many of his contemporaries who focused on the bustling life of the pleasure quarters, Eishi often imbued his works with a sense of aristocratic calm. The composition is ornamental, prioritising the arrangement of figures and patterns over deep spatial perspective. The patterned textiles worn by the women demonstrate the artist's attention to detail in depicting contemporary fashion. This print reflects the cultural fascination with Heian-period aesthetics during the Edo period, where historical narratives were frequently adapted into popular visual media. The work serves as an example of the technical precision achieved by Edo-period printmakers, who collaborated with skilled carvers and printers to produce these multi-block impressions.
