A historical ink and wash sketch by Jurriaan Andriessen depicting the Princess of Hatzfeldt pleading for her husband's life before Napoleon in 1806.
This sketch by the Dutch artist Jurriaan Andriessen captures a dramatic historical episode from the Napoleonic Wars. The scene depicts the Princess of Hatzfeldt kneeling before Napoleon Bonaparte, petitioning for the life of her husband, Prince Franz Ludwig von Hatzfeldt. The event occurred in Berlin in 1806, following the French occupation of the city. Napoleon had accused the Prince of espionage, and the Princess sought an audience to plead for clemency.
Andriessen employs a rapid, gestural style, using ink and wash to define the figures and the interior space. The composition is centred on the interaction between the kneeling Princess and the standing Emperor, who gestures towards a table. The surrounding figures are rendered with minimal detail, focusing the viewer's attention on the central confrontation. The artist includes handwritten Dutch text at the bottom of the sheet, which provides a narrative summary of the event, noting the specific context of the accusation and the subsequent pardon.
As a preparatory study or a historical record, the work reflects the interest of the period in documenting significant political events. The loose line quality and the application of wash suggest a spontaneous approach, typical of an artist recording a contemporary narrative. The work serves as a visual document of the power dynamics between the French administration and the local nobility in occupied territories. The muted palette and the focus on human gesture convey the tension of the encounter without the need for elaborate detail. This piece offers a glimpse into the artistic practice of the early nineteenth century, where historical reportage and personal interpretation often intersected.
