Description
A reproduction of a fifteenth-century printed Book of Hours folio by Guillaume Le Rouge, featuring traditional Gothic typography and rubricated text.
This print reproduces a folio from a printed Book of Hours, a devotional text that became increasingly accessible during the late fifteenth century. Guillaume Le Rouge, a printer active in Paris, produced these volumes to cater to a growing market of laypeople who desired personal prayer books. The page displays the Latin text of the Penitential Psalms, set in a traditional Gothic typeface known as textura. The layout follows the conventions of manuscript tradition, despite the mechanical nature of its production. The use of red ink for rubrics, or headings, provides a visual break in the dense columns of black text. Small, hand-applied blue and red initials mark the beginning of verses, a practice that bridges the gap between the older tradition of hand-copied manuscripts and the efficiency of the printing press. The vellum substrate retains the organic texture and slight discolouration typical of early printed books, offering a glimpse into the material culture of the period. Le Rouge operated during a period when the transition from manuscript to print was fluid. Printers often mimicked the appearance of handwritten codices to maintain the prestige associated with traditional books. This folio captures that specific moment in history, where the precision of movable type meets the aesthetic sensibilities of the medieval scribe. The clarity of the letterforms and the deliberate spacing reflect the technical standards of Parisian printing workshops at the turn of the sixteenth century. This piece serves as a record of early typography and the democratisation of religious literature in Europe.
