A detailed seventeenth-century etching by Giovanni Battista Falda depicting the formal procession of the Auditors of the Rota in Rome.
This etching by Giovanni Battista Falda depicts a formal procession of the Auditors of the Rota, an ecclesiastical court of the Roman Catholic Church. The work is part of a larger series documenting the ceremonial life of the Papal court in seventeenth-century Rome. Falda, a draughtsman and printmaker, is recognised for his precise architectural and topographical records of the city. His work provides a window into the rigid hierarchy and visual culture of the Vatican during the Baroque period.
The composition is organised as a horizontal frieze, a common format for depicting processions in early modern printmaking. The figures are mounted on horses, dressed in the traditional robes of their office, and move from left to right across the frame. The artist employs a clean, disciplined line to define the forms of the horses and the heavy drapery of the riders. The background remains largely empty, save for a few sketched clouds, which directs the viewer's attention to the rhythmic movement of the procession itself. The inclusion of Latin inscriptions at the base identifies the participants, serving as a functional record of the courtly hierarchy.
Falda's technical approach relies on clear hatching to suggest volume and shadow, avoiding unnecessary ornamentation to maintain the clarity of the scene. The print captures the solemnity and order of the Papal administration. It is a valuable example of how print media functioned as a tool for disseminating information about the structure and rituals of the Roman court to a wider audience. The work remains a primary source for historians studying the visual representation of power and the specific vestments worn by officials of the Rota during the late seventeenth century.
