A 16th-century engraving by Sebald Beham depicting the biblical Prodigal Son in a moment of reflection among swine.
This engraving by Sebald Beham, a member of the group known as the Little Masters, depicts a moment from the biblical parable of the Prodigal Son. The scene shows the protagonist kneeling in prayer amidst a herd of swine, a visual representation of his state of destitution before his return to his father. The artist employs precise, controlled lines to define the textures of the animals, the bark of the tree, and the rugged terrain in the background.
Beham was a significant figure in 16th-century German printmaking. His work is characterised by a mastery of the burin, allowing for small-scale compositions that contain a high degree of detail. The inclusion of the Latin inscription, PECCAVI IN COELVM ET CORAM TE (I have sinned against heaven and before thee), identifies the specific passage from the Gospel of Luke. The composition balances the central figure of the kneeling man with the surrounding animals, while the distant architecture provides a sense of spatial depth. The print reflects the technical standards of the period, where artists sought to combine narrative clarity with decorative precision.
As a printmaker, Beham produced numerous works that circulated widely across Europe. This particular engraving demonstrates his ability to render human emotion and physical form within a compact format. The contrast between the foreground figures and the distant, hilly horizon is achieved through subtle hatching techniques. This piece offers a view into the artistic concerns of the German Renaissance, where biblical themes were frequently interpreted through the lens of contemporary life and technical experimentation.
