A decorative lithograph by Theo van Hoytema featuring a peacock in full display alongside two owls, rendered in a distinct Art Nouveau style.
Theo van Hoytema was a Dutch artist known for his lithographic work, particularly his depictions of birds and animals. This print, titled Pronkende pauw en twee uilen, demonstrates his characteristic approach to natural history illustration, which blends scientific observation with the decorative sensibilities of the Art Nouveau period. The composition is divided between the flamboyant display of the peacock on the left and the stoic, watchful presence of two owls on the right.
Van Hoytema employs a clear, graphic line to define the forms of the birds. The peacock, with its tail feathers fanned out, occupies the left side of the frame, surrounded by simple floral motifs. The owls, rendered with more textured, darker plumage, are positioned against a brick wall covered in ivy. The contrast between the two species is intentional, juxtaposing the peacock's vanity with the nocturnal stillness of the owls. The colour palette is restrained, using muted earth tones for the owls and brickwork, punctuated by the cooler blues of the peacock and the bright red of a single poppy.
This work was likely produced as part of a larger series or a children's book, a medium in which Van Hoytema excelled. His ability to simplify natural forms into rhythmic, decorative patterns made his work popular during the late nineteenth century. The print retains a sense of balance, with the verticality of the wall and the ivy providing a structural anchor for the more fluid, organic shapes of the birds. The inclusion of the number nine in the lower corner suggests its origin as a page from a larger publication, reflecting the artist's contribution to the Dutch graphic arts tradition.
