A study in linear geometry and colour interaction by Bauhaus master Josef Albers, featuring a fluid, spiralling form in shades of blue and green.
Josef Albers, a central figure in the Bauhaus movement, produced the Proto-Form series during his transition from Germany to the United States. This work demonstrates his early experimentation with linear geometry and the spatial interaction of colour. Unlike his later, more rigid Homage to the Square series, Proto-Form (B) utilises fluid, calligraphic lines to define a spiralling, organic shape. The composition relies on the tension between the central form and the surrounding field, creating a sense of movement that pulls the eye toward the centre.
The application of paint reveals a textured, almost tactile surface. Albers often applied pigment directly to the support, allowing the brushwork to remain visible rather than smoothing it into a uniform finish. The palette is restricted to variations of blue and green, which creates a cool, atmospheric effect. The thin, light-coloured lines that trace the spiral act as a structural guide, separating the different zones of colour while maintaining the unity of the overall shape.
This piece reflects Albers's interest in perception. By layering these circular forms, he encourages the viewer to consider how the eye tracks lines and how colour relationships shift depending on their proximity to one another. The work is a study in economy of means, where a simple, repeated gesture generates a complex visual experience. It avoids decorative excess, focusing instead on the fundamental relationship between line, colour, and the surface of the board. As an example of his pre-war output, it provides insight into the development of his systematic approach to painting, which would define his career in the decades that followed.
