A refined watercolour illustration by Sergey Solomko depicting two figures in traditional Russian dress with a Borzoi dog.
Sergey Solomko was a Russian artist known for his work in illustration and watercolour, often focusing on historical themes and traditional Russian costume. This piece, titled Proud, captures a moment between two figures dressed in elaborate, historically inspired garments. The woman wears a traditional kokoshnik-style headpiece adorned with blue flowers, while the man is dressed in a patterned tunic with a wide sash. A Borzoi dog stands in the foreground, a breed frequently associated with Russian nobility and the aristocracy of the period.
Solomko spent much of his career in Paris, where his work gained popularity through postcards and book illustrations. His style reflects the influence of the Art Nouveau movement, particularly in the decorative treatment of the clothing and the balanced, staged composition of the figures. The application of watercolour allows for a soft, layered effect, particularly in the rendering of the fabric textures and the fur of the dog. The interaction between the two figures suggests a narrative quality common in his illustrative work, which often drew upon themes of romance, courtly life, and folklore.
This print captures the specific aesthetic of the early twentieth-century Russian revival, a period when artists looked back to pre-Petrine history for inspiration. The attention to detail in the embroidery and the specific posture of the subjects reflect Solomko's interest in costume design and historical accuracy. The composition is contained and deliberate, focusing on the relationship between the human subjects and their animal companion. As a piece of illustrative art, it provides a window into the romanticised view of Russian history that was popular among European audiences during the pre-revolutionary era.
