A section of the Collegio del Cambio fresco cycle, depicting allegorical virtues alongside figures from classical antiquity in the High Renaissance style.
This work is a section of the fresco cycle located in the Sala delle Udienze del Collegio del Cambio in Perugia. Pietro Perugino, a master of the Umbrian school, executed this commission between 1496 and 1500. The composition is divided into two distinct registers: the celestial and the terrestrial.
In the upper register, the allegorical figures of Prudence and Justice are seated upon clouds. They are flanked by small putti who hold tablets inscribed with Latin text. These figures represent the virtues necessary for the governance of the city. Their drapery is rendered with the soft, balanced modelling characteristic of Perugino, creating a sense of calm and order.
The lower register features six figures from antiquity, including Greek and Roman philosophers and statesmen. These men are depicted standing in a row against a simple, open landscape. Their poses are varied, yet they maintain a rhythmic, measured quality that is typical of the artist's mature style. Each figure is draped in heavy, voluminous robes that suggest a classical influence. The inscriptions beneath their feet identify them, linking the wisdom of the ancient world to the civic responsibilities of the Renaissance.
Perugino employs a clear, light-filled palette that avoids excessive shadow. The spatial arrangement is deliberate, ensuring that the viewer can easily distinguish between the divine virtues above and the historical figures below. This fresco remains a primary example of the integration of classical humanism with Christian moral instruction in Italian art. The clarity of the lines and the gentle expressions on the faces of the figures contribute to the overall sense of harmony that defines the artist's contribution to the High Renaissance.
