A fine art print of a folio from the Très Riches Heures du Duc de Berry, featuring exquisite Gothic calligraphy and a detailed miniature painting.
This page originates from the Très Riches Heures du Duc de Berry, a manuscript commissioned by Jean, Duc de Berry, and executed by the Limbourg brothers: Herman, Paul, and Jean. The brothers, originating from Nijmegen, brought a refined sensibility to the French court, blending Northern European observation with Italianate spatial awareness. This specific folio displays the characteristic features of their workshop, including the use of high-quality pigments and gold leaf applied to fine vellum.
The composition features a central column of Latin text in a formal Gothic script, flanked by marginal decorations. These borders include acanthus-style foliage, delicate birds, and small golden sunburst motifs. The miniature painting on the right depicts a figure in prayer before a fortress, set against a background of intricate gold filigree. The figure is rendered with a focus on the drapery of the robes, showing the soft folds and volume typical of the period. The architecture of the castle is depicted with a degree of structural clarity, reflecting the brothers' interest in contemporary building styles.
Illuminated manuscripts of this era functioned as devotional objects for the aristocracy. The Limbourg brothers were known for their ability to balance the demands of religious iconography with a decorative, courtly aesthetic. The use of blue, red, and gold creates a visual rhythm across the page, guiding the eye from the text to the miniature and back to the marginalia. This print captures the precision of the original illumination, preserving the texture of the vellum and the luminosity of the pigments. It offers a view into the technical mastery required to produce such works during the early fifteenth century, where every stroke of the brush served both a narrative and a structural purpose within the page layout.
