A fine art print of an illuminated manuscript page from the Très Riches Heures, featuring delicate Gothic script and a devotional miniature.
This exquisite page originates from the Très Riches Heures du Duc de Berry, a pinnacle of late medieval manuscript illumination. The Limbourg brothers, Herman, Paul, and Jean, produced this work for their patron, Jean, Duke of Berry. The composition displays a characteristic International Gothic sensibility, balancing precise architectural rendering with the devotional focus of the figures.
The miniature depicts a scene of prayer within a vaulted interior, likely a cathedral or chapel. The architectural perspective, while not yet governed by the strict mathematical rules of the later Renaissance, creates a convincing sense of space. The figures are rendered with careful attention to the drapery of their garments, using fine brushwork to suggest volume and texture. The kneeling figure, dressed in white and blue, contrasts with the standing figure in a patterned gold robe, drawing the eye towards the devotional act.
Surrounding the central image, the text is written in a formal Gothic script, punctuated by decorative initials and marginal flourishes. These elements incorporate gold leaf and pigments, typical of the high-status commissions of the early fifteenth century. The use of colour is deliberate, with the cool tones of the architecture providing a neutral backdrop for the warmer hues of the clothing and the gold accents. This page demonstrates the technical mastery of the Limbourg brothers, who were instrumental in bringing a new level of naturalism and narrative clarity to the tradition of book illumination. The work remains a primary example of the artistic output of the Valois court, reflecting the refined tastes of the period and the collaborative nature of the brothers' workshop practice.
