A fine art print of an illuminated manuscript folio by the Limbourg brothers, featuring a scene from Psalm XXXIX with gold leaf and Gothic script.
This illumination originates from the Belles Heures, a devotional book commissioned by Jean, Duc de Berry, from the Limbourg brothers. The brothers, Paul, Herman, and Jean, were active in France during the early fifteenth century and produced some of the most refined examples of International Gothic manuscript painting. This specific folio depicts a scene associated with Psalm XXXIX, showing a crowned figure kneeling amidst a rocky, fiery terrain. The composition balances the narrative miniature with the surrounding text, which is written in a formal Gothic script. The use of gold leaf and pigments reflects the high status of the commission and the technical skill of the artists. The miniature demonstrates the characteristic attention to detail found in the work of the Limbourgs, particularly in the rendering of the flames and the expressive posture of the central figure. The decorative elements, including the foliate border and the historiated initial, integrate the image into the page layout. The Belles Heures is a significant example of the collaboration between patron and artist, representing the aesthetic preferences of the French court during this period. The work displays the characteristic features of the International Gothic style, such as the elegant lines, the use of bright colours, and the focus on courtly refinement, even when depicting dramatic or penitential subjects. The manuscript is currently held in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, where it remains a primary source for the study of medieval book arts.
