A sixteenth-century woodcut design for a backgammon board by Peter Flötner, featuring symmetrical foliate scrolls and a central portrait medallion.
This woodcut by Peter Flötner represents a design for a backgammon board, known in the period as a Puffspiel. Flötner, a Nuremberg-based artist, was a central figure in the dissemination of Italian Renaissance motifs within German decorative arts. His work often bridged the gap between fine art and functional craft, influencing furniture makers, goldsmiths, and cabinetmakers of the sixteenth century.
The composition is divided into horizontal registers. The upper and lower sections feature alternating triangular fields filled with foliate scrolls and urn-like motifs. These shapes correspond to the points on a backgammon board. The central horizontal band acts as a visual anchor, containing a circular medallion with a profile portrait of a man in contemporary dress, flanked by symmetrical acanthus foliage. The use of black-and-white contrast is typical of the woodcut medium, where the artist relies on line weight and negative space to define form rather than colour.
Flötner’s approach to ornamentation is precise and disciplined. The foliage is stylised, reflecting the influence of classical antiquity filtered through the lens of German Mannerism. The design demonstrates a mastery of horror vacui, as nearly every surface is occupied by decorative elements. This print is not merely a graphic work but a functional template intended for artisans to transfer onto wood or other materials. It provides a clear view into the aesthetic priorities of the German Renaissance, where the integration of humanistic portraiture and classical ornament was a primary concern for designers. The clarity of the lines suggests a high level of technical proficiency in the woodcutting process, ensuring that the pattern could be replicated with accuracy by craftsmen working in various media.
