A charming ink wash study of puppies playing in the snow by the Edo period master Nagasawa Rosetsu.
Nagasawa Rosetsu, a student of Maruyama Okyo, was known for his unconventional approach to traditional Japanese painting. This work, depicting a group of puppies playing in a snowy environment, demonstrates his ability to capture movement and character with minimal brushwork. The composition is sparse, utilising the negative space of the paper to suggest the vastness of a winter scene.
Rosetsu often employed a technique where the subjects are rendered with soft, rounded forms, contrasting with the sharp, angular lines of the bamboo stalks. The puppies are depicted in various states of activity, from sitting calmly to tumbling in the snow. This focus on the playful nature of animals was a recurring theme in his oeuvre. The ink wash technique allows for subtle gradations in tone, creating a sense of depth and texture in the fur of the animals and the surrounding terrain.
Unlike the more rigid academic styles of his contemporaries, Rosetsu favoured a more expressive and sometimes whimsical aesthetic. The placement of the figures across the two panels suggests a narrative flow, inviting the viewer to observe the interactions between the animals. The simplicity of the scene belies the technical skill required to balance the ink density and the composition. This print captures the essence of the original sliding door panels, preserving the delicate balance between the subject matter and the empty space that defines this period of Japanese art.
