Theo van Doesburg, born Christiaan Emil Marie Küpper, was a Dutch artist who promoted the De Stijl movement. He believed in abstraction and simplification, reducing compositions to essential forms and colours. Van Doesburg explored the theoretical basis of art, aiming to create a universal visual language. His work influenced architecture, typography, and design. He also used the pseudonym I. K. Bonset, under which he published Dadaist poetry. 'Pure Painting' exemplifies De Stijl principles through its geometric composition and primary colour palette. Rectangular blocks of red, yellow, blue, black, and white are arranged in a grid-like structure. The composition avoids symmetry, creating a dynamic balance. The painting's flat surfaces and sharp edges contribute to its modern aesthetic. Van Doesburg sought to eliminate personal expression, focusing on the objective qualities of colour and form.
