A modernist interpretation of the French countryside near Vence, featuring structured hills and distant purple peaks rendered in oil.
Marsden Hartley produced this work during his time in the south of France, a period marked by his engagement with the physical presence of the French countryside. The composition captures the mountainous terrain near Vence, where the artist sought to reconcile his interest in Cézanne with his own developing approach to form and colour. The painting presents a structured view of the terrain, where the rolling hills and agricultural plots are rendered with a sense of weight and permanence.
The palette is dominated by deep purples and blues in the distant peaks, which contrast with the varied greens and ochres of the foreground. Hartley employs a rhythmic application of paint, creating a sense of volume in the hills that echoes the geological structure of the region. The sky, punctuated by soft, rounded clouds, provides a light counterpoint to the solid mass of the mountains. A small settlement sits atop a hill, acting as a point of human scale within the vast, undulating geography.
Unlike his earlier, more abstract works, this piece demonstrates a return to representational subjects, yet it retains a modernist sensibility in its simplification of shapes and deliberate colour choices. The brushwork is controlled, building up the forms through distinct planes rather than smooth transitions. This approach allows the viewer to perceive the construction of the image, revealing the artist's analytical process. The work reflects Hartley's ability to translate the atmosphere of a specific location into a cohesive visual statement, balancing the rugged reality of the Alps with a refined, painterly order. It remains a clear example of his mid-career focus on the expressive potential of the natural world.
