A light, Rococo-era composition by Dutch master Jacob de Wit, depicting a group of cherubic putti interacting with ornate, gilded mirror frames.
Jacob de Wit was a prominent Dutch painter of the eighteenth century, widely recognised for his mastery of the 'witje' technique, which involved creating monochrome paintings that mimicked the appearance of marble reliefs. This specific work, 'Putti met spiegels', departs from his typical grisaille style, offering a glimpse into his ability to handle colour and light within the playful, decorative framework of the Rococo period.
The composition features a group of putti, the cherubic figures common in European art of the era, interacting with ornate, gilded mirror frames. De Wit arranges these figures in a dynamic, swirling formation that suggests movement through the clouds. The soft, atmospheric background provides a neutral setting, allowing the focus to remain on the interaction between the figures and the reflective objects. The artist employs a light, fluid brushwork that captures the soft texture of skin and the delicate drapery of the fabrics worn by the putti.
De Wit's work often decorated the interiors of grand Dutch townhouses and public buildings, where such allegorical scenes were integrated into the architecture. This piece reflects the lighter, more ornamental aesthetic that gained popularity in the Netherlands during the early eighteenth century, moving away from the heavier, darker tones of the preceding century. The inclusion of mirrors as objects of interest suggests a thematic exploration of vanity or reflection, common motifs in the art of the time. The painting demonstrates the artist's technical proficiency in anatomy and spatial arrangement, as the putti are depicted from various angles, creating a sense of depth and activity within the frame. The palette is restrained, relying on soft flesh tones, muted blues, and the metallic gold of the frames to create a balanced visual experience.
