A delicate ink and colour fan painting by Shen Hao, depicting the historical poet Qu Yuan in a serene, atmospheric river setting.
This fan painting by Shen Hao depicts a scene from the life of the poet Qu Yuan, a figure of immense cultural weight in Chinese history. The composition follows the traditional format of a folding fan, which necessitates a curved arrangement of elements. Shen Hao employs a restrained palette, allowing the gold-flecked paper to provide a luminous ground that suggests the atmosphere of a riverbank at dawn or dusk.
The narrative focus is subtle. A small boat carrying the fisherman occupies the lower centre, while the figure of Qu Yuan is positioned near the shore. The surrounding environment consists of soft, rounded mountain forms rendered with light ink washes. These peaks recede into the distance, creating a sense of spatial depth despite the limitations of the fan shape. The brushwork is delicate, reflecting the literati tradition where the artist prioritises expressive clarity over rigid realism.
Shen Hao, active during the transition from the Ming to the Qing dynasty, was known for his theoretical writings on painting as well as his practice. His work often reflects the scholarly pursuit of harmony between human emotion and the natural world. In this piece, the interaction between the historical poet and the fisherman serves as a meditation on integrity and withdrawal from public life. The sparse application of colour and the emphasis on negative space are characteristic of the period's aesthetic preferences. The work remains a fine example of how functional objects, such as fans, were utilised as canvases for sophisticated artistic expression, blending poetry, philosophy, and visual art into a single, portable form.
