A minimalist abstract composition by Winifred Nicholson, featuring geometric forms and a soft, muted palette from her time in Paris.
Winifred Nicholson, a painter associated with the St Ives School and a significant figure in British Modernism, produced this work during her time living in Paris. The title refers to the address of the studio she shared with her husband, Ben Nicholson, at 48 Quai d’Auteuil. This period marked a shift in her practice toward a more rigorous exploration of geometric abstraction, influenced by her proximity to the Parisian avant-garde.
The composition is defined by two large, overlapping ovals set against a muted, cool-toned background. Within these forms, Nicholson employs a restrained palette of pale blues, soft whites, and accents of yellow. The geometric precision of the rectangles and lines within the ovals suggests a dialogue with the Constructivist ideas that were circulating among her contemporaries at the time. Unlike the more aggressive or industrial abstraction of some of her peers, Nicholson maintains a sense of lightness and atmospheric quality. The paint application is thin, allowing the texture of the canvas to remain visible, which adds a tactile dimension to the otherwise stark arrangement of shapes.
This work demonstrates Nicholson's ability to reduce visual information to its essential components. By focusing on the relationship between form, space, and light, she creates a balanced, contemplative image. The interplay between the circular and rectangular elements provides a sense of rhythm, while the subtle tonal shifts prevent the composition from appearing static. It is a clear example of her interest in the structural properties of painting, where the subject matter is secondary to the arrangement of colour and geometry on the two-dimensional surface. The work remains a quiet, precise study of spatial organisation, reflecting the intellectual rigour she applied to her artistic process during these years in France.
