Description
Quiraing on Highland Skye folds green terraces between dark rock towers above turquoise coastal water, with distant blue mountains and bright white clouds giving the high summer outlook an airy breadth.
Quiraing occupies the eastern face of Meall na Suiramach at the northern end of Skye’s Trotternish escarpment. Thick basalt over weaker sedimentary rocks produced repeated landslides, leaving a complex of cliffs and grassy hollows. Named formations include the Needle pinnacle, the Table plateau and the keep shaped rock called the Prison.
Dark narrow towers rise beside broad green ledges, separated by steep shadowed gullies. The view opens beyond them towards pale turquoise water and low coastal points. Grey foreground slabs descend through short grass, while distant blue mountains trace the far horizon. Strong light across the terraces and scattered high clouds suggest a clear summer day above the broken escarpment.
