Max Bill
A precise geometric composition by Max Bill, featuring a central pink square surrounded by balanced bands of red, blue, yellow, and green.
Max Bill, a polymath of the twentieth century, was a central figure in the development of Concrete Art. His work is defined by a rigorous application of mathematical principles to visual form. Radiation of Pink, produced in 1973, demonstrates his interest in the relationship between colour, proportion, and spatial arrangement. The composition is presented on a diamond-oriented canvas, which shifts the viewer's perception of the internal geometric structure. At the centre of the work sits a large pink square, which acts as the primary anchor for the surrounding bands of colour. Bill employs a systematic approach to the distribution of these hues, using red, blue, and yellow to create a balanced, symmetrical arrangement. The edges of the canvas are defined by triangular sections of yellow and green, which frame the internal square and rectangular forms. There is no attempt to represent external reality; instead, the work focuses on the physical properties of the paint and the geometric logic of the layout. Bill was a student at the Bauhaus in Dessau, and this training is evident in his disciplined approach to composition. He believed that art should be an objective, universal language, free from the subjective emotionalism of expressionism. By using flat planes of colour and precise lines, he creates a sense of order and clarity. The interaction between the colours is calculated to produce a specific visual rhythm, where each hue occupies a defined space within the overall structure. This piece is a clear example of his methodology, where the artist functions as a designer of visual systems. The work invites the viewer to observe the interplay of shapes and the way in which colour boundaries define the space of the canvas, resulting in a clean, intellectual aesthetic that remains consistent with the principles of the Concrete Art movement.
