A traditional Japanese woodblock print by Hasegawa Sadanobu, capturing a rainy day at the Togano Gate with delicate diagonal lines and muted autumnal tones.
Hasegawa Sadanobu was a prominent figure in the Osaka school of ukiyo-e printmaking. Unlike his contemporaries in Edo, who often focused on theatrical portraits or urban scenes, Sadanobu frequently turned his attention to the specific topography of the Kansai region. This print depicts the Togano area, a location known for its temples and natural beauty, captured during a heavy downpour.
The composition utilises diagonal lines to represent falling rain, a technique that creates a sense of movement across the surface of the paper. These lines cut through the scene, partially obscuring the trees and the small structures nestled along the riverbank. The colour palette is restrained, relying on muted greens, earthy browns, and soft ochre tones to convey the atmosphere of a damp, overcast day. The bridge serves as a structural anchor, drawing the eye toward the small dwellings that sit near the water.
Sadanobu demonstrates a clear interest in the atmospheric conditions of the region. The print avoids excessive detail, allowing the viewer to focus on the interplay between the natural environment and the human-made elements. The trees, rendered with autumnal hues, contrast with the cool, greyish tones of the rain-filled sky. This work is representative of the regional style of Osaka printmakers, who maintained a distinct approach to subject matter and colour application throughout the mid-nineteenth century. The print provides a quiet observation of a specific moment in time, reflecting the artist's ability to translate the mood of a rainy day into the medium of woodblock printing. It remains a clear example of the technical precision required to layer colours and textures in traditional Japanese print production.
