A delicate ink wash painting by the monk-artist Xugu, featuring a resting creature amidst falling petals on a traditional fan-shaped composition.
Xugu, born Zhu Huairen, was a Buddhist monk and a member of the Shanghai School of painting. His work often departs from the rigid conventions of traditional literati art, favouring a personal, expressive approach. This fan-shaped composition depicts a small creature, likely a squirrel or similar mammal, curled in rest upon a branch. The artist employs a dry brush technique to render the fur, creating a textured, almost tactile quality that contrasts with the fluid, wet ink used for the surrounding branches.
The inclusion of soft, pink-toned floral elements provides a subtle colour balance against the monochromatic ink work. Xugu was known for his unconventional perspective and his ability to capture the essence of his subjects through minimal, deliberate strokes. The fan format, a common medium for Chinese painters of the period, dictates the composition, forcing the viewer to engage with the curvature of the paper. The negative space surrounding the central figure allows the eye to rest, mirroring the meditative theme suggested by the title.
This piece demonstrates the artist's mastery of ink wash techniques, where the density of the pigment is manipulated to suggest volume and shadow without the need for heavy outlines. The calligraphic quality of the brushwork is evident in the branches, which possess a rhythmic, organic energy. As a monk, Xugu often infused his art with themes of quietude and observation. This work is a fine example of his ability to elevate a simple observation of nature into a contemplative study. The print captures the delicate nuances of the original ink application, preserving the subtle gradations of tone and the specific character of the brushwork that defines Xugu's unique contribution to nineteenth-century Chinese art.
