A serene woodblock print by Utagawa Kunisada depicting travellers and a horse caught in the gentle, persistent rains of early summer.
Utagawa Kunisada, also known as Utagawa Toyokuni III, produced this woodblock print as part of a series depicting seasonal weather patterns. The image captures the atmosphere of the fifth month, known in the traditional Japanese calendar as the season of the samidare, or early summer rains. The composition is dominated by vertical lines representing the persistent downpour, which obscures the distant hills and creates a sense of damp, humid stillness.
In the foreground, a horse stands near a small stream, its coat rendered in a muted reddish-brown. A figure in a conical hat tends to the animal, while another traveller walks along a path further back, protected by a straw cape. The presence of a small wooden structure, likely a shrine or bridge, adds a human element to the rural scene. The colour palette relies on soft greens, earthy browns, and the pale grey of the rain-filled sky. Kunisada employs a balanced approach to space, using the large tree in the centre to anchor the composition while allowing the eye to travel along the winding path towards the background. The print demonstrates the technical precision of the Ukiyo-e tradition, where the layering of woodblocks allows for subtle gradations in tone and texture. This work offers a quiet observation of rural life during a specific climatic period, reflecting the Japanese aesthetic appreciation for the changing seasons and the transient nature of weather. The print is a fine example of the landscape genre within the broader output of the Utagawa school, which was highly productive during the Edo period.
